Student Health Insurance Program
Important Information for students currently enrolled in the Student Health Insurance
Plan (SHIP) for fall semester:
Coverage will end on 12/31/24, during the university’s holiday break. As of this year,
we are no longer doing an automatic rollover of coverage from fall to spring. If you
will be returning to UNC for Spring Semester and would like your health insurance
to continue for the spring coverage period (1/1/25 – 8/16/25), you will need to re-enroll
before you leave campus for the holiday break. Otherwise, you will have a break in
your spring coverage and may not show active in the system until the week of 2/1/25.
(Spring insurance effective date will still go back to 1/1/25). This does not mean you will not be covered, this only means the insurance carrier
will not recognize you in their system until after 2/1/15 unless you ask to be re-enrolled
sooner. Medical providers and Pharmacies may not provide services or prescriptions after
12/31/24 through the week of 2/1/25, unless you re-enroll prior to 12/18/24 to show
continuous active insurance.
(You do need to meet the credit requirements in spring to continue coverage (9 or more credit hours in the under-grad program/6 or more credit hours in the grad program)
To enroll in spring coverage: Click Here to email Nicky Weglin at the UNC Student Health Insurance Office to enroll in Medical Insurance
Please Note: YOU MUST TAKE ACTION BEFORE LEAVING SCHOOL FOR THE HOLIDAY BREAK TO HAVE CONTINUOUS COVERAGE FOR SPRING SEMESTER.
(If lab work or other items are sent to an outside lab, the $500 deductible will apply).
All Undergraduate students taking 9 or more credit hours and all Degree Seeking Graduate students with 6 or more credits, regardless of the type of class (on campus, off campus, online only) are required to have full coverage health insurance. Students who meet the credit hour criteria will be automatically enrolled in the UNC Student Health Insurance Plan and the cost will be added to your UNC student tuition bill.
Automatic charges apply fall semester and spring semesters. Any student on the insurance plan in the spring semester will automatically have coverage for summer months.
For students taking summer courses, charges and enrollment do NOT automatically apply. If you would like to purchase summer insurance, please contact the insurance office at 970-351-1915 or email nicky.weglin@bianlifan.com
If you have other insurance and wish to waive the UNC insurance plan, you must complete
the online waiver by the deadline which is always 10 days after classes start.
International Students: All F and J visa status international students must follow
the waiver process through the Office of Global Engagement (OGE) Global ISSS Portal. Please login to the portal, go to the Requests and Forms tab, and look for the Health Insurance Waiver Request. International students cannot waive on the UNC URSA site. You must go through the
Office of Global Engagement.
If you are an F or J visa status international student and have questions regarding the UNC health insurance requirement, or waiving the school plan, contact the Office of Global Engagement International Student and Scholar Services.
Domestic students have the option to waive out of the UNC insurance plan by completing the online insurance waiver showing proof of other health insurance coverage prior to the deadline, which is always the 10th day of classes each semester. If a waiver is completed for the UNC Student Health Insurance Plan for Fall semester, the enrollment and subsequent charge for Spring semester will also be waived. If you have questions regarding re-enrollment in the UNC Insurance Plan, contact nicky.weglin@bianlifan.com or call 970-351-1915.
Veterans: Check your VA education benefits before waiving the school insurance plan. Many times those benefits will cover the cost of this plan that can be used anywhere Cigna insurance is accepted. Please contact VA.SCO@bianlifan.com with your questions
